I spent two years of my childhood in Utah schools. Even though it was near a military base my family lived downtown and attended the schools in that area. I do not want to generalize, but I can understand the feeling experienced by "outsiders" in the school system. I was physically assulted by my teacher once when I was 7 years old because I was not understanding my math problems fast enough. I was the only child in the class who was "different". I was too young to understand then and just thought I had done something horribly wrong. I had also thought that there was something wrong with me because the other children were not allowed to play with me. My brother went through similar troubles. Paranioa was everywhere that I might somehow "corrupt" the other children.
The first job I got out in CO was working for a Mormon and he was the same way! Just about every other person in the office was Mormon. After getting poked, proded and bluntly asked when I wasn't going to church, I brought them all together, told them I was pagan, but had read the Book of Mormon and the Bible. They had a look of shock and terror that almost made me burst out laughing.
Within three weeks I was 'let go for staff reduction and budget concerns" and three weeks after that I put sizable "budget concern" up their by winning a discrimination case! I 'd all the way to the bank!
